A radially polarized elegant beam (RPEB) in which the argument of the Laguerre part is complex is introduced and studied. The nonparaxial and paraxial propagation properties of the RPEB are demonstrated analytically and numerically in free space in terms of the vectorial Rayleigh–Sommerfeld formulas. The electric field distribution of the RPEB preserves the radial polarization at any propagation position. For the lowest-order RPEB and the lowest-order radially polarized beam cases, the general expressions for the nonparaxial propagation field are identical in free space. The exact on-axis expression of the RPEB has been provided in closedform terms for an arbitrary transverse beam size.

In analogy to a perturbed harmonic oscillator, we calculate the fundamental and some other higher order soliton solutions of the nonlocal nonlinear Schödinger equation (NNLSE) in the second approximation in the generally nonlocal case. Comparing with numerical simulations we show that soliton solutions in the second approximation can describe the generally nonlocal soliton states of the NNLSE more exactly than that in the zeroth approximation. We show that for the nonlocal case of an exponential-decay type nonlocal response the Gaussian-function-like soliton solutions cannot describe the nonlocal soliton states exactly even in the strongly nonlocal case. The properties of such nonlocal solitons are investigated. In the strongly nonlocal limit, the soliton’s power and phase constant are both in inverse proportion to the fourth power of its beam width for the nonlocal case of a Gaussian function type nonlocal response, and are both in inverse proportion to the third power of its beam width for the nonlocal case of an exponential-decay type nonlocal response.

In this paper, discussed is the evolution of two co-propagating optical beams in parallel in nonlocal Kerr media, governed by the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NNLSE). A simplified model to the NNLSE is presented when the media is strongly nonlocal, which is a bridge between the Snyder–Mitchell model (Snyder and Mitchell Science 276 1538, 1997) and the strongly-nonlocal model (Guo, Luo, Yi, Chi, and Xie Phys. Rev. E. 69 016602, 2004). It is found that when one of the soliton beams is much stronger than the other, the weaker (probe beam) can experience p nonlinear phase shift, which can be modulated by the stronger (pump beam), within a rather short propagation distance (about 40-lm). The comparisons of analytical solutions of the model with numerical simulations of the NNLSE show that the model is of excellent accuracy in the case of strong nonlocality.

This paper clarifies the controversial issue over 40 years between the quantum approach by Pekar and the phenomenological approach by Ginzburg about the exciton–polariton spatial dispersion theory. For an isotropic nongyrotropic medium, the analytical explicit function of the impermeability tensor (the inverse of the permittivity tensor) is obtained from the anisotropic undamped-wave harmonic oscillator model. After expanding with respect to small parameters within it rather than to wavevector, the approximate refractive indices can be determined from the eigenvalue equation. By this treatment, the phenomenological approach is proved to be the approximation of the quantum approach near the resonance frequency. The condition for the approximation is discussed.
