Tumor-Associated Macrophage-Targeted Photosensitizers for Photodynamic Therapy
,-0001,():
Photodynamic therapy(PDT), which destroys target cells through the combined action of a photosensitizer and molecular oxygen upon irradiation with light to generate reactive oxygen species(ROS), is a promising modality for cancer treatment.~([1]) Tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs) have emerged as a promising target for cancer treatment.~([2]) Development of TAM-targeted photosensitizers would improve therapeutic effect of PDT and reduce the damage to normal tissue. Recently, we have developed a series of phthalocyanine(Pc)-based TAM-targeted photosensitizer or nanophotosensitizing system.~([3,4]) The photosensitizer and nanophotosensitizing system exhibit specific affinity to macrophage via the scavenger receptor-A, and therefore show a high selectivity toward tumor tissue by targeting TAMs.
