Nonuniform Mesh Topology Optimization for Inverse Design of Large-Scale Silicon Photonic Devices

Abstract:We propose a nonuniform mesh topology optimization method for inverse design of large-scale silicon photonic devices. By grouping multiple adjacent horizontal grid points into single optimization variables while maintaining smaller vertical grid, the method reduces the dimensionality of the design space while maintains accurate electromagnetic calculations. The method is validated through simulations of a 10.8 × 10.8 μm2 single-mode vertical coupler and a 16 × 16 μm2 four-port multimode-splitting coupler.
