Empirical Analysis of Impact of Energy Consumption, Environmental Pollution on Economic Growth

Abstract：With the rapid development of economy, the environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution and so on have become very serious. This paper uses co-integration analysis and other time series analysis for the quantitative relations of environmental pollution, energy consumption and economic growth. By collecting 1991-2010 time series data about GDP, industrial water emissions and total energy consumption, using the Johansen co-integration test, Granger causality test and the establishment of vector error correction model prove that there is a long-term equilibrium relationship and one-way causal relationship among the environmental pollution, energy consumption and economic growth. The empirical results show that a long-term equilibrium relationship and one-way causality among the environmental problems, energy consumption and economic growth, economic development relies heavily on energy and thus indirectly influences environment hugely.
