The application of preformed metal crowns in dental caries of primary teeth

Abstract：Dental caries of primary teeth is a common oral disease of children. The third national oral health epidemiological investigation revealed the situation of high caries prevalence rate and low consultation rate in Chinese children primary teeth. Based on the typical morphological anatomy and structure characteristics of primary teeth, children's caries-unfriendly diet habits and other relevant factors, dental caries of primary teeth shows specific clinical manifestations compared with dental caries of permanent teeth, which could possibly affect the succedaneous permanent teeth, growth and development of children and even physiological health. In contemporary dentistry, primary teeth dental caries is mainly treated with drugs or restorative treatment or both, while the clinical operators trend toward restorative treatment as the main treatment method. Preformed metal crowns (PMCs), a subclass of restorative treatment, is typically preferred for the indication of extensive carious lesions of primary teeth in clinical practice. The objective of this article was to review the available information regarding the preformed metal crowns restorative treatment of primary teeth dental caries, including its background, clinical indications, clinical pathway and correlation researches.
